Uganda or Rwanda?
Both Uganda and Rwanda offer unique gorilla trekking experiences, with vast rainforests, rich biodiversity, and volcanic terrain that provides a dramatic backdrop to the gorilla habitats. Our gorilla trekking safaris in both countries are designed to offer travelers a once-in-a-lifetime adventure experience.
In Uganda, gorilla trekking is a rugged adventure through Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park's dense forests. The treks can be challenging, but the reward of seeing the gorillas up close in their natural habitat is well worth the effort. During the trek, travelers can expect to see a variety of wildlife, including monkeys, birds, and other primates.
Similarly, Rwanda offers a more accessible trek in the Volcanoes National Park, often involving a climb through bamboo forests. The trek is as adventurous as in Uganda and is suitable for luxury safari travelers. On jungle treks, trekkers can enjoy stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
It's important to note that responsible tourism is crucial in both Uganda and Rwanda. Travelers should be mindful of their impact on the environment and the gorillas' well-being by following the rules and regulations set out by the parks, such as keeping a safe distance from the gorillas, not littering, and avoiding using flash photography.
Responsible Tourism
Mountain gorillas are an endangered species, with only around 1,000 individuals remaining in the wild. The major threats to their survival include habitat loss, poaching, and disease. By participating in responsible gorilla tourism, travelers can help support conservation efforts and ensure the survival of these incredible primates.
Both Uganda and Rwanda have well-established tourism infrastructure, making it easy for travelers to access gorilla trekking destinations. The best time to go gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda is during the dry season, from June to September and December to February, when the trails are less muddy and easier to navigate. So pack your bags, join us on these incredible gorilla safaris, and be a part of something truly meaningful!

Best Time For Gorilla Trekking in Uganda and Rwanda
While gorilla trekking is possible year-round in Uganda and Rwanda, certain months offer distinct advantages for a successful and enjoyable experience.
Dry Seasons
June-September, December-February
These periods see minimal rainfall, making trekking trails less muddy and slippery. Clearer skies offer better visibility and opportunities for stunning photographs. However, these peak seasons attract more visitors, so booking gorilla permits well in advance is essential.
Wet Seasons
March-May, October-November
Though trails can be more challenging, the lush vegetation and fewer crowds attract those seeking a quieter experience. Gorilla permits might be easier to obtain, and some lodges offer lower rates during these shoulder seasons. Be prepared for rain, but it often comes in short bursts, leaving room for sunshine..
The Gorilla Permit
Gorilla permits are mandatory for both Uganda and Rwanda, as they strictly limit the number of people who can visit the gorillas each day to protect these endangered species.
In Uganda, gorilla permits cost $800 per person. You can obtain them directly from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) by visiting their offices in Kampala or online through their website.
It's recommended to book your permit well in advance, especially during peak seasons (June-September, December-February) when permits sell out quickly.
In Rwanda, gorilla permits are considerably more expensive, costing $1500 per person. These permits can be obtained through the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) via their website, their Kigali offices, or even directly at park headquarters. Since Rwanda's gorilla permits are in high demand, it's crucial to book them many months in advance, particularly if you're planning to travel during peak season.
